Lake Forest High School's football team lost 30-9 at Carmel on Friday, Aug. 28, falling to 0-2 on the season.

The Scouts trailed from the opening quarter and never recovered. Carmel quarterback Reed Dangel, a senior transfer from Warren, connected with Kyron Hart on a 14-yard touchdown pass to put the Corsairs up 7-0 with 4:57 left in the first quarter.

Lake Forest kicker Michael Knight answered with a 34-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3.

That was as close as the Scouts got.

Carmel punched in a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:13 left before halftime to extend the lead to 14-3. Then Dangel found Hart again on a 36-yard strike with 2.3 seconds on the clock, sending the Corsairs into the break up 21-3.

At that point, the Scouts' offense had managed just three points across six quarters of football to start the season, all on Knight's field goal. Lake Forest was shut out 6-0 by Deerfield in the Aug. 21 opener.

The Athletic Scout noted at halftime that the Scouts had moved the ball at times and forced two defensive takeaways. Converting drives into points remained the problem.

Lake Forest scored six more points in the second half to reach the 30-9 final, though details on those scores were not available at publication.

Head coach Chuck Spagnoli acknowledged the offensive struggles before the Carmel game in an interview with The Athletic Scout. He took responsibility for the Week 1 loss, calling the penalties "absurd" and faulting execution across all phases.

"I don't think we are nearly as bad as we played, and I'm sure of that … I don't know what the reason was for us to play so poorly other than I didn't prepare them well enough," Spagnoli said.

Spagnoli had warned that Carmel's size would be a challenge, saying the Scouts needed to rely on speed rather than power against a roster that includes multiple Power 4 recruits. Junior linebacker Jameer Miles carries 15 Power 4 offers. Junior offensive tackle Wyatt VanBoening, listed at 6-foot-7 and 290 pounds, holds 18, according to The Athletic Scout's pre-game Watch List.

Dangel and Hart connected twice for touchdowns, and Carmel controlled the game on both sides of the ball.

Last season, Carmel beat Lake Forest 51-7. Friday's margin was narrower, but the Scouts head to Zion for Week 3 still without a win.
