A burglary crew smashed glass doors at least six businesses in and near Lake Bluff early Sunday, Sept. 27, using landscaping bricks to break in and ransack cash registers.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office responded around 3 a.m. Sunday to several businesses in the Knollwood area of unincorporated Lake Bluff, Chief Christopher Covelli said, first reported by Lake & McHenry County Scanner. The Lake Bluff Police Department also responded to two possible commercial burglaries in the 900 block of Rockland Road, Deputy Police Chief Erik Gehrke said.
No arrests had been announced as of Thursday.
Covelli identified the targeted locations in the 700 block of West Rockland Road, the 100 block of North Waukegan Road and the 200 block of Waukegan Road. A fourth burglary was attempted at a business in the 700 block of Rockland Road, but the thieves could not get inside, Covelli said.
Poke Bros at 703 Rockland Road had a shattered glass door and cash register drawers dumped in the parking lot, according to photos shared by Shields Township. Luke's of Lake Bluff at 203 North Waukegan Road had its front door glass smashed.
Forest Greens Juice Bar at 123 Waukegan Road was left with broken glass scattered across the floor. Epic Burger at 955 Rockland Road also had a front door smashed, according to Shields Township photos.
At Bratski's, 715 Rockland Road, an alarm scared the burglars off around 3 a.m. before they could get inside. Surveillance video from the business shows a white four-door sedan pulling in behind the building and taking off once the alarm lights activated.
Covelli said the vehicle involved in the burglaries was a white four-door sedan.
"The cases are still under investigation, but our detective is working with other nearby agencies who experienced similar crimes that morning," Gehrke said.
About an hour and 15 minutes after the Lake Bluff break-ins, masked suspects burglarized Los Compadres de Waukegan at 1614 Washington Street around 4:15 a.m., according to the Scanner report. A white sedan was also used as the getaway vehicle there.
Two other Waukegan restaurants, Tony's Bakery and Master Sushi and Drive Thru, were also burglarized that morning, the Scanner reported. Whether investigators have formally connected the Waukegan break-ins to those in the Lake Bluff area was not confirmed as of Thursday.
Covelli said the method of operation "matches other burglaries that occurred in incorporated Lake Bluff and elsewhere in the county."
Shields Township warned residents and business owners to secure their properties, keep cash out of sight and contact law enforcement if they see suspicious activity.
Two other Lake Bluff businesses, Maevery Public House at 20 East Scranton Avenue and Scooter's Hot Dogs at 721 Rockland Road, were burglarized the week before Thursday's spree, according to the Scanner report.
