Lake Bluff drivers can expect stepped-up patrols and zero tolerance for impaired or unbuckled motorists starting Aug. 14, as the village's police department joins more than 200 Illinois agencies in a statewide Labor Day enforcement push.
The campaign runs through the early morning hours of Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day, according to a Village of Lake Bluff announcement released Aug. 4. Officers will target impaired driving from alcohol, cannabis and other drugs, enforce seat belt laws for all occupants and crack down on distracted driving.
"We'll be patrolling with zero tolerance for impaired driving, because our goal is to protect the people of Lake Bluff," Police Chief Matthew Smizinski said in the announcement.
The effort falls under three statewide initiatives funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety dollars: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, Drive High. Get a DUI, and Click It or Ticket. IDOT is also running a companion media blitz called "It's Not a Game" across radio, television and digital platforms through the enforcement window.
Why it matters locally
Holiday weekends are among the deadliest stretches on Illinois roads. During the 2025 Independence Day weekend, 17 fatal crashes killed 18 people statewide, according to Shaw Local reporting on IDOT data.
In the announcement, Smizinski urged residents to plan ahead: designate a sober driver, buckle every passenger and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
