Democrat Sandy Hart won the Lake County treasurer race on Nov. 3, defeating Republican David Peñaherrera with about 66% of the vote, according to unofficial results tabulated by the Associated Press.
Hart received 142,257 votes to Peñaherrera's 71,357, with 100% of precincts reporting, according to AP results published by KHQA. Fox 32 also published AP-tabulated results for the race.
The results are unofficial until certified. The Lake County Clerk's office has scheduled certification for Nov. 24 at 3 p.m.
Hart told the Chicago Tribune on election night that she felt good about the results. With her win, her District 13 County Board seat will go to an appointee. That process could be announced as early as December, Hart said.
She will be sworn in as Lake County treasurer later this year, the Tribune reported.
Who ran
Hart is the current Lake County Board chair, first elected to the board in 2012. She holds an MBA from DePaul University and a government investment professional certification, the Tribune reported in an October race profile.
"I've got a strong working relationship with the staff, with other elected officials, inside and outside of the county government," Hart told the Tribune before the election.
Peñaherrera is a Barrington resident and loan officer who moved to Lake County in 2017. He said he entered politics over affordability concerns, arguing both the county and state need greater fiscal responsibility.
He is a Republican who said he opposes President Donald Trump.
Incumbent Holly Kim, who won the office in 2018, unsuccessfully ran for Illinois comptroller in the spring primary.
What else was on the ballot
The treasurer was one of several countywide offices on the Nov. 3 ballot. Lake County voters also chose a clerk, sheriff and regional superintendent of schools, along with County Board members in 12 districts, according to the county's election page.
Lake County set a midterm early-voting record. Clerk Anthony Vega said 119,981 people had voted through Nov. 1, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Residents can view official results on the Lake County election results page. Outstanding and late-arriving ballot updates will be posted beginning Nov. 5, according to the Lake County Clerk's office.
