Lake Forest firefighters and police officers will gather at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Market Square for a ceremony marking 25 years since the terrorist attacks that killed 2,977 people.

The Lake Forest fire and police departments host the annual observance at the square on Western Avenue, according to a column by Charles Selle in the Chicago Tribune. The column did not list program details for the Lake Forest ceremony.

Other Lake County communities are holding observances Friday. Highland Park's fire department will lead a Last Alarm Bell Ceremony at 9 a.m. at Bennett Gordon Hall, Ravinia Festival, 201 St. Johns Ave. Gurnee's American Legion Post 771 holds its observance at 9:45 a.m. at Milwaukee and Grand avenues.

Libertyville gathers at 10 a.m. at downtown Cook Park. Wauconda's fire protection district marks the day at 9:30 a.m. at the 9/11 Memorial on Liberty and Main streets. Lindenhurst begins at 6 p.m. at the Village Square Park gazebo, followed by a Walk to Remember ending at 7 p.m. at the village's 9/11 Memorial Garden.

Selle, a former Lake County News-Sun reporter and editor, also wrote about the Kinsale Garden of Remembrance in County Cork, Ireland, where 344 native Irish trees honor the 343 FDNY firefighters and chaplain the Rev. Michael Judge who died on Sept. 11, 2001. The garden, created by Irish-born nurse Kathleen Cait Murphy on her family's farmland, opened in March 2002. A remembrance ceremony is planned there to coincide with the 25th anniversary observances.
