The 118th Lake Forest Day brings its parade through the heart of downtown's shopping district Wednesday, Aug. 5, channeling spectators past Market Square storefronts and Deerpath Road merchants for the first time in the event's history.

The new route, which begins at Deerpath Road and Oakwood Avenue and heads east through the Central Business District to Western Avenue, places the 10 a.m. parade directly in front of downtown retailers and restaurants. As we reported July 13, the Deerpath segment is a departure from prior years' path.

At least one downtown business is already capitalizing on the crowds. Once Upon a Bagel, at 268 E. Deerpath Road, is providing complimentary mini bagels at the free pre-parade family party in Market Square from 8 to 10 a.m. The party also features bubbles and balloon animals, according to event organizers.

The full-day schedule stretches the foot-traffic window from early morning well into the evening. A 5K fun run kicks off at 7 a.m., the parade steps off at 10 a.m., and the carnival runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The carnival also operated Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 6 to 10 p.m., giving nearby businesses a two-day boost.

The Great Lakes Navy Band, based at Naval Station Great Lakes north of Lake Forest, performs as part of the parade lineup.

Fundraiser for Post 264

American Legion McKinlock Post 264 organizes Lake Forest Day, and the carnival and annual raffle serve as the post's primary fundraising event. The organization states that all proceeds stay in Lake County to assist veterans, support youth programs and promote patriotism.

The post, headquartered at 801 N. McKinley Road in Lake Forest, has operated for more than a century. This year's parade theme ties the celebration to the national America 250 commemoration, with the official title "Salutes the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America!"

Parade participation is free and open to the public. Volunteer sign-ups and event details are available at lakeforestday.com. The carnival closes at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
