A fundraiser for Lake Forest Police Officer Filip Czarnecki has raised more than $180,000 to bring him home from Nicaragua after a severe brain injury.

His family reported positive signs of recovery, including continued movement, in a Sept. 5 update on the campaign page. Czarnecki was visiting family in Nicaragua on a personal vacation when he suffered a fall onto his head, causing a traumatic brain injury, according to Patch.

He was initially hospitalized in León on a ventilator and in a coma. He has since been transferred to a better-equipped hospital in Managua, according to the fundraiser.

The GoFundMe campaign, titled "Bring Officer Filip Czarnecki Home," was organized by colleague Paul Daizovi, a Lake Forest police officer. It launched Friday, Sept. 4, and crossed the $180,000 mark within days, according to Patch's Tuesday, Sept. 8, report. The campaign's goal is $220,000, leaving about $40,000 still to be raised.

"Once he arrives in Chicago, continued specialized medical care will be essential as we work toward getting Fil strong enough to return home to his family," Daizovi said through the fundraiser.

The GoFundMe page states that emergency medical evacuations out of Central America are rarely covered by standard insurance and often require large upfront payment. The money goes toward a specialized fixed-wing air ambulance to the United States, international hospital and ICU expenses, ongoing medical care and hospitalization, medical transportation and travel costs, and lodging for family members staying in Nicaragua.

Lake Forest High School's student newspaper, The Forest Scout, described Czarnecki as a four-year veteran of the Lake Forest Police Department. Lake & McHenry County Scanner also reported on the case Sept. 6, noting Czarnecki was in critical condition and that his family was working to raise money for medical transport.

No transport date has been set. The family's immediate priority is arranging a medical air ambulance from Managua to Chicago, where Czarnecki would receive continued specialized care. The fundraiser remains active.
