Sam Larson is headed to professional baseball.
The Lake Forest High School Class of 2023 graduate was selected by the Colorado Rockies with the 464th overall pick in the 16th round of the 2026 MLB Draft on Monday, July 13. The 6-foot-4 right-hander becomes another former Scout to reach the pro ranks.
Larson, 21, pitched at Tulane University this spring after transferring from Division III Denison University. The move paid off. In 28 appearances for the Green Wave in 2026, he posted a 3.95 ERA across 41 innings, struck out 54 batters, and recorded four saves to lead the team, according to Tulane's athletics department.
His relief work stood out: 39 strikeouts in 26 innings out of the bullpen, with opponents hitting just .190 against him. His 28 appearances ranked fourth in the American Athletic Conference.
The path from Lake Forest to New Orleans ran through Granville, Ohio. At Denison in 2025, Larson went 6-1 with a 1.91 ERA in 56.2 innings, struck out 71, and held opponents to a .181 batting average. He earned D3Baseball.com Second Team All-America honors and Second Team All-NCAC recognition before making the jump to Division I.
Back in his Scouts days, Prep Baseball Report clocked Larson's fastball at 86-88 mph, topping out at 89, with a slider at 78-79 mph and a sinking changeup at 80-82.
Lake Forest Community High School celebrated the pick in a statement, calling Larson "a standout pitcher" who "helped lead" the program before his collegiate career.
Larson is the earliest Tulane player ever selected by the Rockies in the draft and just the third Green Wave player picked by the franchise, according to Tulane athletics. He is also the son of Kavi and Mark Larson and was a National Honor Society member at LFHS.
The signing deadline is Monday, July 27. No minor league assignment has been announced.
