A man was found dead along the Lake Michigan shoreline near the Jean and John Greene Nature Preserve in Lake Forest on Monday, June 29, prompting a joint investigation by Lake Forest detectives and the Lake County Coroner's Office.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Lake Forest Police Department and Fire Department responded at 9:52 a.m. after a resident reported witnessing the man sustain what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a Patch report by staff writer Rachel Barnes published that afternoon. The incident occurred near the 61-acre preserve along the Lake Michigan bluffs east of Sheridan Road.
Residents near the preserve may notice an increased police presence in the area as the investigation continues, police said, according to the Patch report.
What Has Not Been Released
As of Tuesday, July 1, authorities have not publicly identified the man. No age, city of residence, or other identifying information has been released.
The Lake County Coroner's Office has not issued a public cause-of-death determination. No official press release from the Lake Forest Police Department has appeared on the city's website, cityoflakeforest.com, as of July 1.
Neither agency has announced a timeline for further public updates or a date for a press conference.

The Jean and John Greene Nature Preserve, managed by the Lake Forest Open Lands Association, sits between Villa Turicum to the north and Fort Sheridan to the south. Its entrance is 0.2 miles south of McCormick Drive off Sheridan Road. The preserve provides 1.5 miles of trails and direct access to the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Police have not indicated any closures of the preserve related to Monday's incident. Residents who use the trails or shoreline access should be aware of the potential for continued investigative activity in the area.
